The independent kitesurfing course is the final step to riding on your own. In this IKO Level 3 course, you’ll go from your first short rides to confident, controlled riding, and learn the skills that let you kite safely without an instructor by your side.
What You’ll Learn
- Riding in both directions consistently, with good board and kite control.
- Controlling your speed by edging the board.
- Staying upwind, so you can always ride back to where you started.
- Changing direction without stopping.
- Self-rescue and packing down your kite in the water, in case you ever need it.
- Self-launching your kite and assessing the risks in your riding area.
Becoming an Independent Rider
At the end of this course, your IKO card shows you’re an independent kitesurfer. That means kite centers around the world can see you’re ready to rent equipment and ride on your own, from Nabq Bay to your next kite holiday. Learn more about your IKO certification.
How Long Is the Course?
The independent course takes around 6 hours of time on the water, usually spread over a few sessions so you can rest between them and practise what you’ve learned.
Before You Start
This course follows the intermediate kitesurfing course, so you should already be able to water start and ride short distances. Not sure if you’re ready? Tell us what you’ve done so far, and our instructors will advise you.
